Raw Adventures in Toronto

Travel, raw food, friends, summer, and shopping - my favorite things in life! For over a week now, I've been enjoying the most fabulous adventures in Toronto, Canada.

Two weekends ago I flew into the city, and was welcomed by two incredible girl friends, and fellow raw food bloggers - Nelly (From Nelly...With Love), and Kelli (Animal Friendly Eating). This was our first time meeting in person and it was everything I thought it would be - exactly like hanging out with sisters/best friends. Nelly is an incredible hostess, and drove us all over the place in search of raw restaurants, tropical fruit, and various shops...

On the first night, we enjoyed a super delicious spread of salad with her homemade raw arugula pesto, quinoa curry, hummus, sauerkraut, and shaved beet root salad. While the girls whipped up goodies such as kale chips, and moonie pies into the wee hours of the night (hehe, we're talkin' 3am folks), I crashed much earlier.

Raw tiramisu for dessert! I've never been a coffee/tiramisu person but this was pure deliciousness. I couldn't taste the coffee. Isn't it gorgeous, especially with the flower on top?!

Saturday morning was nice and loungy before we headed downtown to the St. Lawrence Market to enjoy lunch at a cute little raw cafe called Cruda. We enjoyed salads, zucchini pasta with gnocchi, wild mushroom burger, young coconut water - surprisingly, no dessert, lol. We saved that for later because Nelly and Kelly made treats!

We ventured into Chinatown that afternoon in search of durian. We did manage to find 2 but from my durian experiences, these weren't ideal, and at $40 each we decided against it. To my delight, we found jackfruit!!!! My #1 favorite fruit! I was sooo excited. We picked up a piece of a large one, and a baby fruit as well. We also got some rambutans, mangosteens, atemoyas, champagne mangoes, young coconuts, and cashew apples (where the cashews grow).

That evening was dinner at Raw Aura.

An appetizer of nachos for the three of us to share was in order first, in addition to cocktails.

Pear/beet juice with vodka. Good but a wee bit strong for me.

We all enjoyed Greek Kale Salad which I thought was just OK. Pretty basic.

The girls shared the special of the day: sprouted wild rice with sweet potato/moroccan dish - again, I thought it was ok... then again I personally don't care for raw wild rice, as I find it too crunchy. The sauce was tasty though.

Silly me. I've never liked burgers. Meat, veggie, or raw... so I'm not sure what compelled me to go for this, but I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and was seriously disappointed. The "bun" and "burger" seemed like the same thing, although slightly different in flavor, and was waaay too heavy! The eggplant bacon on it was yummy, but there wasn't enough of it to balance out all the nutty burger... same with the ketchup and cheese sauce. I forced my way through most of it, and unfortunately it sat in my tummy like a rock, then sat heavy in my gut. I'm not sure if it was too much flax or something, but it "clogged" me up for almost 2 days, if you know what I mean. UGH! Note to self: don't ever eat that again!

We didn't bother ordering dessert, when we had the best one waiting for us at home! Nelly made caramello moonie pies which we enjoyed UNcovered (not dipped in choccie), aside some raw Blue Mountain Organics vanilla ice cream which we picked up at the store.

So as I said in the beginning... great friends, great food, great fun all the way around. I love these girls!

This is just part of my trip... stay tuned for more raw adventures in Toronto!!!

Yes! You should all move to Toronto. We could buy a big house with a huge kitchen and make moon pies, do yoga and play all day.

Heathy, I'm so glad that you Nelly and Kelli had a great weekend together in TO. I was thrilled to meet up with you all on Monday.

Sounds like you had such an awesome time- by all accounts!

i know what you mean re. the dense raw burgers. That's one thing that stops me from going 100% raw- the dense/dehydrated raw foods. They always sit heavily in my stomach and block me. Are you ok with other dehydrated products or denser raw food creations? I guess your diet must focus on fresh fruits and veges more so xxx
